Jack, AOL provided some of the start up funding for the Motley Fool under their "Greenhouse" program. The Fool was one of its biggest early successes. In exchange for the backing by Greenhouse, AOL gets an OPTION on 20% (working from memory, but I believe this is correct percentage) of the equity in the startup. This is the case with the Motley Fool.

The Motley Fool has had a read only site on the web for quite a while. No posting capability. All posts come from AOL site. This site is being featured now on Yahoo!

AOL has announced their intent to require that content partners will have to bring something exclusive to AOL. They may have a web site with similar, but lesser free content. If the web site is identical to the area on AOL, AOL will be asking that there be some charge for access to the web site. It remains to be seen if they can finesse this requirement.

Off topic: Are you related to Duncan Idaho? You guys post like twins..... :-)
