ok, I'm gonna horn in here...

>We are self determining, that is a fact, not something we have to
fight over. <
I wager this will be a controversial statement. A great many people view themselves as religious and/or spiritual. A universal theme of the major religions is that our soul or essence or nature (pick a term...) has an inbuilt moral optimum. If we accept this (and I'm neither advocating nor attacking that basic idea here) then the "self-determination" is a chimera.
If there is an inbuilt moral optimum, then self-determination is replaced by behavior which is more or less in line with our "true selves". And (again arguing from Christian or Buddhist or Hindu... doctrine) we do not freely determine our true nature. That was done by the Creator[s].
So I'd expect a lot of resistance to the above idea presented as fact - because it might offend the sensibilities of the religious among us.
Of course, if you're a devout <whatever>, the moral dos and don'ts are codified to a greater or lesser extent. And since faith brings with it an acceptance of the truth inherent in this moral code - a devotion to "sides that have long forsaken {the} essence" of life becomes important. Y'see - one of those sides is bound to be True (or at least closer to being True), and identifying and championing that side will always appear morally better than ascribing "deep purpose" to simply being alive.

Please accept the above as a hypothetical rebuttal - not a statement of my own beliefs/prejudices. :-)

In l'affaire Clinton, we often see our core ethics expressed in how we stand on the issue. Moralists wanna see the guy's arse kicked early&often. Progressives wanna see the Republican opposition discredited and punished for sensationalizing a side issue. Rest assured - i have a strong poinion. But it is not different enough from something said somewhere in these last 14000 posts to bear repeating... :-D
