Yes, we display a degree of self-determination both individually and as members of various collectives (family, municipality, congregation...?). Each of us will identify with some group - true lone wolves are rare. And with group membership comes a surprising amount of ethical presets. Sure, the individual can choose to differ with line items in a group's charter (like a practicing Catholic deciding to extend full dignity to a homosexual friend) but more often than not - through sheer laziness maybe - the individual identifies with the group's values. On a thread like this, I expect to see the sharpest delineation between folks who describe themselves as [social] conservatives and [social] progressives. I often feel uninformed/ignorant concerning these two constellations of values - but every so often my curiosity gets tickled. Your dialog with pezz re effective sex control tickled my curiosity. What am I - conservative or progressive? I am an unashamed mosaic. Patchwork creature. Back to the core dialog - does sex education/free access to condoms work? I see you as saying "I don't think so". What I ask is how you would deal with the issue (I guess the real bottom line is How do we minimize unwanted pregnancies and the transmission of venereal diseases particularly among our teenagres?)- assuming we both agree that we live in a very diverse society here, one which won't unify behind any one banner of faith or moral value. It's an interesting problem - and I invite you to tell me your thoughts. Lather
