Bruce, Such a statement from the CDC would be a great belated Xmas gift for Quidel. From my discussions with the company in early December, sales of their new H. pylori tests were going much better than they expected. Although this market is not yet as "well developed" as strep a testing in the sense that not nearly as many H. pylori tests are sold as strep a tests, the market will eventually be far larger for H. pylori. I have an acquaintance who is a drug representative for Abbott and she told me in late November that "anything to do with H. pylori, treatment or testing, will be huge". She mentioned Quidel favorably but she wasn't too specific what she was talking about-I can't help speculate (and it really is pure speculation on my part) whether this interest in Quidel and H. pylori particularly prompted QDEL's mgmt to adopt the recent shareholder's rights plan-it may not stop an acquisition or takeover, but it will make it more expensive for an acquirer to gain control of QDEL.
Anyway, I agree w/ Mike in the next post about the potential significance of H. pylori testing if indeed it is "officially" linked by the CDC or others to diseases besides ulcers. I thought the analogy to PAP smears was especially appropriate-all this info just reinforces my belief that we all made the right decision by investing in QDEL- some of us were just a bit too early- it is selling for just about what it was selling for when I initially invested 4 years ago- I have been able to accumulate a fair number of shares and warrants in dribs + drabs throughout the years- I can't help but feel we are about to be rewarded for our patience. One more comment - although I have anxiously been awaiting the 3rd quarter results because I think they will be strong, we all need to remember that the H. pylori test revenues will grow steadily over the next quarters and years and will help substantially in "smoothing out" the seasonality of QDEL's revenues. Welcome to the thread! BOB
