ADSL technology is very new. It was just a month ago that a worldwide standard was decided upon. The difference between ADSL and existing DSL technology is that the ADSL technology utilizes your existing phone lines and therefore requires no installation, rewiring, etc. by the phone company. Thus high speed internet access can be made available to the mass market easily and inexpensively. That's why the RBOC's are rushing to make this available so they can get there before the cable access providers,e.g. athome.

What I can't understand is how they think they are going to be able to compete with the RBOC's who actually own the lines coming into your home...at least I think they do. I also didn't think they had even started mass producing the new modems necessary to be able to utilize this technology so was surprised to hear the service is already available.

Anyway, not saying this isn't a good short candidate. Just that ADSL not being new isn't a reason.
