TAXES -- EVER UPWARD

The Tax Foundation has released some more figures on how much the average American pays in taxes, and how long it takes them to work to pay their tax bill.

In 1913 "Tax Freedom Day," the day that the average American has earned enough to pay all taxes for the year, occurred in January. In 1997 that day fell in the second week in May.

According to the Tax Foundation, in 1997 Americans paid 35.2 percent of their total income in taxes. In 1913 that figure was 8 percent.

Remember, please, that through such transfer programs as the so-called Earned Income Tax Credit, many lower income people don't pay taxes at anywhere near the 35.2 percent rate. If you are an achiever. If you are in the upper 20 percent of income earners in this country, you are paying over 40 percent of your total income in taxes.

Oh --- and it continues to climb year after year after year.

When do you think you will have had enough?
