The comment about old technology was referring to the components used to make the box and media. I did not want to give the impression that the capability was archiac, just the hardware construction. The Zip drive (I own one and love it) doesn't even have an on/off switch.
The computer interface is one of Adaptec's oldest SCSI designs.

I cannot dispute that the capabillity of the JAZ is a technological wonder but the actual unit does not have anything that isn't old in design. This has been one of their keys to success. They take old technology, old IC designs, old SCSI controllers and repackage them to create these little marvels. This is amazing to me. The components used in these drives are cheap to procure since they are not advanced technology. My company is providing a chip for the JAZ drive that is not using our most advanced processing and design technology and therefore commands a lower ASP. Their approach is why use a scalpel when a butter knife will do. I can't fault them for that.

Syquest's 135Mb was described to me as a very precarious and delicate drive and if you looked at it the wrong way, well.

I was unaware of the flipping required on the Apex drive. Thanks for that piece of info. I guess with all the newly announced DVD DVD-R etal. I will stay away from PNCL and not pay attention to it anymore.
Ambivalence and a lack of volumes of info lead me to beleive that it isn't worth anymore time or effort on anyones part on this thread. There are other more exciting things to look at. Thanks for putting the nail in that coffin for me.
