Chris I think you are right about the QCOM move being related to the Motorola news. In particular, the MOT announcements emphasize the earnings from PCS (which we know is QCOM related) and the potential for Wireless Local Loop -( which is QCOM related). It beats me why the market didn't see this coming but I'll take the two points now anyway. Great Ali Baba story!! Here is the Mot stuff:

1/10/97 10:45 am... STILL HOLD MOTOROLA (MOT 67***)... Q4 EPS $0.39 vs.
$0.72.. General Systems revenue up 17%, oper. profit rose on much higher phone
shipments... unit's orders up 21% on strength in cellular handsets,
equipment... Semiconductor sales down 18%, orders down 11% though up vs. Q3..
Messaging sales off 17%, orders down 24% as N. America paging cos. cut
inventory (though MOT thinks their sales rose)... Like cellular results, should
be boosted by PCS rollout... with semiconductor upturn, see strong 2nd half..
Wireless local loop small now, but big potential... MOT up sharply since 11/1,
now at 25X '97 estimate. /K.Gooley-CFA
