The expectations for Dell Computer Corp. (Nasdaq: DELL) are so out of whack that the company has to have a blowout quarter every quarter to impress Wall Street. But that's life when you are one of the most expensive tech stocks, according to a Merrill Lynch study.

In the study, Merrill Lynch factored in trailing price-to-earning ratios, P/E's based on estimates, revenue, return on capital and other metrics to determine the most expensive tech stocks. Merrill Lynch, which omitted Internet stocks, said Dell was the third most expensive tech stock behind Taiwan Semiconductor and Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT).
