Thank you for that thoughtful response. I do have some problems with how I am categorized in it. I still stand on my statement that I know the purpose of life. I don't believe for a moment that means I know how to regulate or legislate every situation in life until the end of time. It does give me a place to begin to struggle with my own perspective on things though.

<<core moral sense that even the most reprobate criminals share>>

Start with the golden rule if you wish. There is a synonymous version of the golden rule in every thriving culture in the world and the history of the world. Even in a criminal subculture, there has to be "honor among thieves" for them to succeed.

I consider myself very open minded and tolerant. Listening RR bashing rant over and over by people like Lather, as if the things said about me in such rants have any basis in truth, is evidence of my patience. At least that is what I tell my self. People who are afraid of the idea that principle based decision making will end up hurting them, require patience. Any ideal that universally respects the human condition is by definition a principle.

<<It is one thing to say you "know" the ultimate purpose of life. It is quite another to say you "know" precisely how that purpose will be, or should be, realized. Its like the end and the means; we may both agree on the same end, but differ on the proper means to achieve it.>>

Agreed, and how often have you heard me declare the ends to justify the means. I argued for days against the sanctions on Iraq because they target innocent children (the means) and could only be justified by hurting Saddam Hussain (the end). Which isn't even true since these are the outlying villagers who hate him. These are the homes the deserters from his army escape to. I also argued and continue to argue that the "social grenade" premise is a means justifying an end that is destroying the lives of innocent youth, to accomplish a political agenda. revolution please

My purpose in life is based on a connection between my soul and my God. It forbids me to attempt to assume power over even one other creature on this planet. It insists that I accept responsibility to support the needs of other creatures to thrive in health. It forbids me to be comfortable with injustice such as tyranny.

I know there are religious people who are tyrants. I am at a total loss as to why the rest of you insist on associating me with them.
