Gottfried .. and BTW, thanks for trying to help. When I boot, the MS song plays and then I hear a <Pop> and then 3 rapid <pops>. I know something's wrong after that because it used to continue popping until my desktop had finished loading. So my guess is that there is some program that is loading on startup that "takes over" the sound card - but I don't know how to determine what program that might be.
