Pure is my term for pure optic transfers through fiber optic cable. No optical to electronic conversion like ten Base T intermediaries for example. In the very pure sense that would be optical to the desktop. Eventually, the PC would have an optical bus and the chips' interconnect would be optical too. The latter will take time, maybe ten years.

The long haul optical to the cable headend could be done completely optically now and to a certain extent is being done through DWDM with IP protocol. The Metro version is slow to get off the runway because the cost and management is problematical to say the least. Probably optical to the desktop will be slower to arrive than optical PCs because caching servers and other techniques can do a reasonable job of handling expected local loop loads without needing substantial infrastructure upgrade. However, that wouldn't be the case if the public finds broadband services irresistible especially if video interactive catches on. Then you need optical all the way, the Pure Way.
