Came across something confusing today:

In the Nov. 9th issue of Computerworld, there is an ad by Oracle claiming that Express analyzes 50X as much data as Hyperion and is faster in doing so. The numbers they cite:

Product/ Data Density/ Query execution time (250K queries)
Express 5.0% 34:02
Essbase 0.1% 36:30

Now, TODAY (4 days after the date of the magazine), Hyperion releases news claiming that they can process twice as fast as Oracle. Their data:

Product/ Data Density/ Query execution time
Essbase 0.1% 9:41
Express 0.1% 20:15
Essbase 5.0% 16:23
Express 5.0% 34:02 (the same number cited above)

So, in a week, Essbase reduced its processing time by 75%? And now they cull 5% of the data faster than they culled .1% of the data just a week ago?

I think this is a perfect example of the futility in using these benchmarks to measure the speed and effectiveness of the OLAP market products as well as any other product areas that try to one-up each other through benchmarking. It can't mean that much if this type of leapfrogging takes place so rapidly. I'm sure it also has a lot to do with what hardware platform is being used, the type of data being analyzed, etc.

Would love to hear others' comments on this, since I'm not a deeply technical person.
