Setback for Apec trade talks as Japan wins allies

<< Negotiations to liberalise US$1.5 trillion worth of Asia-Pacific trade by the end of next year have suffered a setback as a number of countries join Japan in trying to stall the opening of some sectors.

The mainland is believed to be among those seeking more time and flexibility in opening up some of the nine trade sectors that Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (Apec) leaders pledged to liberalise at their annual summit in Vancouver last year.

Three days of talks by regional senior officials in Kuala Lumpur ended in stalemate yesterday, with negotiators accepting the likelihood that some Apec economies will need to take more time and accept lower tariff targets due to the regional financial crisis. >>
