The negativity is *purely* (pun intended) a consequence of
the inability of anyone to make sense of SR's claims. The
level of (non)disclosure on their website is ludicrous. They
offer no explanation *whatever* of how they use their
putatively cleaner laser line to support higher
bandwidths except to say that they use an external modulator
(no kidding :), and obscurely reference '4 dimensional optical
space' (gee Mr. Wizard isn't it swell!). What I found particu-
larly hilarious was that they dedicate an entire page of the
website to telling you what SR *isn't* without ever telling
you what it *is*

Instead they offer an endless series of neologisms (e.g.
synchronous refractive communications)
with no explanation of the underlying physical ideas
or discussion in terms of conventionally accepted
nomenclature. No white papers, no timing or waveform specs or
even pictures, no reference to refereed literature
showing test devices or their putatively novel
solutions to Maxwells equations :). Most of this could
be cleared up with a criply worded statement of not
more than 200 words.

Many of their claims are either nonspectacular e.g.
1 angstrom line width (ho humm) or misleading e.g.
a 1 femtosecond diode (no such animal if *electrical*
response time is implied).

You claim that this reticence is a good strategy. I can
guarantee you that this strategy will result in my company
not even bothering to inquire further. The only strategy
that this suggests is one of considerable uncertainty
as to the security or relevance of their patents.

None of this proves that they don't have something. What
it proves is that they much more interested in talking to the
investment managers and the financial reporters
than they are to the technologists and that story
is going to have to change if they want to actually
sell anything besides their company.
