PORTALS Jun20, 1998

The lust for one-stop news and information has created a frenzied war among high traffic Internet sites, dubbed "portals" because they are a users first destination once connected to a 'net service.
"What's really going on," says analyst Kate Delhagen of Forrester Research, "is the quest to capture and lock in customers eyeballs and get any associated information that goes along with those eyeballs, specifically credit cards and e-mail addresses."
Jerry Yang, one of the founders of Yahoo! says his company's goal is to keep an audience once they've arrived.
"We try to create environments where people interact with content," he says. "You'll see us more and more funneling different pieces of content to our users." "The idea," says Yang, is to give away features and make money from ads, while continuing to develop a relationship with users."
