Isn't it amazing that a group of such distinguished and conservative churchmen as the Founders could write a Constitution (and have it ratified by all 13 states) without once mentioning a god, or a church, or religion itself. It was the strongest possible assertion that a citizen's religion was his own affair, and not something to be imposed on others, and that the state ought to be completely secular and not involved in any way with religion. But the people did not trust them on this and other problems. The first Congress elected in part by the people (and in part by the people's legislatures) in Amendment I immediately banned Congressional establishment (although state establishment was permitted until Amendment XIV in 1868) and guaranteed free exercise of religion against Congressional encroachment.
