steve, Yes, of course "it is true." That's the way of the world.

Marker Makers are there to #1 make money for their firms (of course) and #2 to create and maintain an orderly market in the the stocks they have an interest in.

That old S.I. message you linked to is how the practice is done day in and day out. i.e. "going short" is not some mean and cruel scheme to defraud the retail side (the public) as some people posting on S.I. would like to make everyone believe.

The MMs must go short to maintain an orderly market, and as your provided link stated - to maintain a good working relationship with the big retail houses by servicing the big retail houses' customers requests to buy or sell stocks.
