LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 9, 1997--PageStar, manufacturer of a new vehicle tracking and recovery system, has selected Motorola to provide key components to fill initial purchase orders of more than 80,000 units.
The announcement was made Thursday at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas by Steve Lipman, president of PageStar. The new system, expected to be in full production by the end of the first quarter of 1997, is code named: StarTrak.
Designed to combat vehicle theft, which costs Americans approximately $7.6 billion a year, PageStar's new system combines its patented technologies enhanced with Motorola's Datalink II Plus Messaging Receiver, GT Oncore GPS Receiver, and 3-watt OEM Transceiver.
Motorola's Derivative Technologies Division (DTD) provides the core one-way wireless paging technologies that allows a car owner to signal their automobile from anywhere, and literally slow down the vehicle until it stops. Motorola's Position and Navigation Systems Business (PNSB) provides the GPS receiver, which can determine the vehicle's location virtually anywhere in the world.
"We are pleased and excited that Motorola will provide the major OEM components for PageStar's new system. Consumers will now have access to the most innovative and highest quality vehicle tracking and recovery system available today," said Lipman.
One of the nation's leading interface design & engineering firms, with over 17 years' experience with Motorola components, is in the process of finishing final interface software development. This will allow final prototype testing to be done in February 1997.
Using a standard or cellular phone from virtually anywhere around the world, you simply dial an 800 number, enter a security code, and the system will control the vehicle by simulating the vehicle running out of gas and eventually coming to a complete stop over a period of five minutes.
The consumer may also lock/unlock their doors, disable their car before going to sleep, or control any one of a number of user-defined options.
Another feature of PageStar's system is, as soon as the vehicle is stolen, the owner is alerted by pager or telephone, informing them that the PageStar Control Center has been notified. The owner simply calls the PageStar Control Center so that the stolen vehicle can be stopped and recovered safely.
A vehicle equipped with this system can be located virtually anywhere in the world through GPS and paging technologies.
Inside the car, the thief hears a warning that the car is running out of gas. The thief is then told to pull over immediately, the car is being tracked and the police have been notified. At the same time, the signal from the GPS satellite locates the stolen vehicle, transmits its location to the PageStar Control Center, and the center contacts the police.
"Current automobile security systems do not allow the customer to control their vehicle or to locate and safely recover a stolen vehicle affordably. This new line of PageStar products makes it simple for customers to control their vehicles by using our patented remote control switching technology to easily locate and recover their vehicle with minimal cost," said Lipman.
"And customers don't need to install a standard cellular phone in the vehicle to operate the system, thus saving on the related installation fees and monthly service charges."
PageStar is a publicly traded corporation providing remote control wireless switching products and services and holds two exclusive patents on its vehicle tracking and recovery system. PageStar is traded OTC/BB: PGST.
