News FLASH! Metro Halifax-Dartmouth Residents First in World to Access Virtual Software Library at Lightning Speed
HALIFAX, April 7, 1998 -- Today, Colin Latham, President and CEO of MT&T, together with local and international partners launched the next phase of Mpowered PCä , a revolutionary world-first technology developed in Nova Scotia.
Mpowered PC enables consumers to access a virtual software library of educational, entertainment and productivity titles on demand. This is combined with high speed Internet access via ADSL technology, which simultaneously transmits voice, video and data at high speeds over a single phone line, up to 250 times faster than a 28.8 kbps modem. This package takes computing to a new industry level, enhancing affordability and access for consumers in a way that was just not possible before.
"High speed Internet access is going to be the standard in the next few years," said Mpowered PC Chief Technology Officer, Monty Sharma. "Mpowered PC is so much more. By creating the opportunity to select from a warehouse of software, consumers can finally get the most out of their computer."
Mpowered PC subscribers can select education and business-related software hourly, weekly, or yearly. Titles are continually updated so customers always have the latest version at prices as low as $1.50 for two hours. To add even more value, Mpowered PC also contains a user manager to help consumers budget and manage their family's use of software.
"It's like having the sophistication of a state-of-the-art office system at home, without any hassles," added Sharma. "And our 24-hour support-line is like having your own personal computer specialist."
To bring Mpowered PC to Nova Scotia, MT&T worked with Novell and Paradyne, industry leaders in software development and technology. MT&T and Paradyne are bringing a world-first to market with 7.2 megabyte ADSL technology, which enables the delivery of software on demand.
Mpowered PC's core network software was developed with Novell, an international leader who will continue to work with MT&T to take this service to new markets. "We're delighted to be partnered with an industry leader who will continue to grow with us and share our vision in changing the way people connect," said Colin Latham.
Mpowered PC consumers can easily access software created by international as well as Nova Scotia designers. Examples of locally developed titles include The MathProbe from MathResources Inc. and HTML Assistant PROä 97 by Brooklyn North Software Inc.
"The more people realize the endless possibilities of learning through their computer, the more they'll want to access the kind of software we can deliver," said Ron Fitzgerald, from MathResources Inc., creator of an innovative math tutorial software used world-wide.
MT&T Mpowered PC is now available in Metro Halifax-Dartmouth with plans to roll-out province-wide.
MT&T, a member of the Stentor alliance of Canadian telecom providers, supplies nearly one million Nova Scotians with wireline and wireless communication, information, transaction and entertainment services. For more information, access the MT&T world wide web site at www.mtt.ca.
