Backuptrk - obviously you're well informed. Try less than 20%.

It is the kind of ranting about issues that aren't based in facts that make rational discussion impossible.

Again, all that a gas-guzzler tax would do is inconvenience a very, very tiny number of people who would spend the money no matter what. The impact on other segments of the economy and the persons who rely on it for their livelihood would be far more damaging. But it would make the less well-off feel better that their government had whacked the evil rich. That unfortunately, is the ultimate purpose of those kinds of proposals - mandated economic equality and the voting support that comes from the promotion thereof.

Popularist politico-economic ideas are rarely based in sound principles. They prey on human issues of fear, fairness, greed and envy and should be considered suspect from the start. Repetitious propaganda is the tool used to maintain the tension among those who feel that someone else (i.e., the "rich") are undeserving of their status and are not contributing sufficiently.

Go where you want, but at least be more informed about the ramifications of simplistic popularist ideas.

Mr. K.
