That way, the printer would have near 100% compatibility with the standard in medias- CD. And a CD-Rom drive's cost is way $$$ low. 8x CD-Rom drives go for as little as $25-$35 OEM cost. And 8x is at least as fast as a Zip drive. If there was a substantial market for this, we would have seen it already. But, these stand-alone devices are/will be just a small niche.
