"Like cRocky, I bought the Mock 3, once, the only thing I'll buy again and again is the blades. "

This analogy has always bothered me. Iomega does not make razor blades or something that is even close. Razor blades dull after a few uses. Therefore, one requires new blades or suffer the pain. Zip disks, on the other hand, do not wear after a few uses. I have disks that I have used for years (but not razor blades). Why do I need more? I simply don't. The disk tie-rates have either stayed constant or decreased over the years as proof of this point (compare this to razor blade tie-rates).

That brings me to the 250 Zip announcement that so many are excited about here. Well, I think that this announcement is bad news for Iomega. It means that Sony probably has the HiFD ready to go. If I'm going to spend $200 for a new drive, I would have to seriously look at the Sony specs vs 250 Zips before I'd take the plunge on either. If the 250 Zip is not faster than the 100 Zip, then I think Sony has a critical advantage. Backwards compatibility to the 3.5" floppy is not something that I have considered important, but now neither is the backwards compatibility to the 100 Zip.

On a positive note, if Iomega can change all currently manufactured drives to the 250 Zip and not change the price, then I think they will beat Sony. Having two versions of the drive exist simultaneously will only cloud their market dominance and hurt their chances of ever becoming the "standard" (however short lived).

Flame on.
