Chris,

I would think you know about the problems of the Japanese stock market. Here is my opinion of the problem. A recent article I read states that Japan puts vertually no emphasis into controlling their stock market with respect to stock speculation and manipulation. Considering it is such a large stock market, it has fewer people monitoring and policing the market than many small third world countries. Because of this, Japanese people have been loosing faith in the market and putting their money back into savings accounts. Thus increasingly, the folks in the Japanese stock market are manipulating and speculating and the market has a gradually smaller solid base of long term investors to hold up market prices.

Analysis

Bad. 1) If their economy and stock market continues to worsen, companies may have to pull their investments out of the U.S. because they can no longer afford them. 2) The Japanese may not be able to continue to fund the U.S. deficit.

Good. 1) Less competition for U.S. companies in world markets, 2) U.S. as a whole and the U.S. stock market will continue to be the place folks overseas with money see as a safe haven for their money.

Take care, Denise
