The Republicans are under serious pressure from the rabid, foaming-at-the-mouth Clinton-hater wing of the party. I seriously believe most Republicans are searching for a way out of the whole mess. But they have to make it look good--like they really tried to punish the president--or else they risk losing the support of the vocal faction of hardcore nuts who seriously believe Clinton is the antichrist.

But you're right. If the Republicans continue to proceed on the impeachment path, they risk alienating the vast majority of suburban mainstream voters who view the Clinton haters as a tired joke.
