The music and broadcast industries are trying to prevent digital recording devices from being able to record off the net. Those efforts will probably prove to be impossible. One problem is that although one device or compression scheme might be able to be prevented, other ones will proliferate in their place. MP3 compression/recording standard could easily be replaced by "BL3" - "BootLeg3" a hypothetical standard developed among techno savy users. Once someone writes the compression and interface editors and drivers and throws them up on the Internet as free shareware, the proliferation would be quick (in the event of effective regulation of MP3). There is just no practical way to stop it.
