If you are looking for a replacement on your own computer, then 'replacing windows' needs to be more specific because Windows is an Operating System. You need to be concerned about applications that run on Windows (which ones you use, etc) and see if there is an equivalent or replacement for Linux.

If you are looking from an investment perspective, it is important to understand the licensing issues involved with Linux. Read the GNU website (www.gnu.org) and in particular, the GPL. There is little chance that a Linux company will assume the equivalent position that Microsoft has in the Windows world (even if Linux were to replace Windows wholesale). Application vendors (Oracle, Applix, etc) can make software for Linux and maintain the same business model that application vendors have with Windows. I'm sure Tom would be willing to talk your ear off about the merits of Applix ;)
