Well, maybe here's where we begin to drift apart a little. To behave selfishly, one must have self awareness and be capable of choice and those poor bees have neither.
Are you saying we have no choice in our ultimate actions-that we are driven only by the instinct for survival in all its forms? We get much more complex than that, John! What sets us apart in the animal kingdom is our ability to be more than the thoughtless animals who are driven only by instinct. We are not excluding ourselves from organic life; we are the pinnacle of it. We have the ability to move beyond pure instinct into reason, as you frequently point out. And reason can allow us to make decisions that either coincide with instinct or oppose it. Even to move into the realm of noble or altruistic behavior. And I know now we separate because you don't recognize those behaviors.
The phone rang and I lost my train of thought!
Hey, John! Thanks for not capping at me. See how civilized we all can be!
