I've been reading all the very informative posts regarding the technology that drives this market. I've read them all twice. Thank you. I think that SNDK has 2 strategic challenges: technology and price.
SNDK is the market leader with wide acceptance of their technology. They introduce new products that builds on top of their existing product lines. The other technologies by IBM and others seem to be 6 months away. In addition, they need to gain the same wide acceptance of their products that SNDK has already established. In that time, it appears that SNDK can and have leveraged their market leadership by introducing additional products with better technologies. IMO, manufacturers who have already accepted the CF format would continue on due to ease of transitioning the manufacturing of their end-products. SNDK's challenge is to make sure to remain competitive with other technologies that would make it less appealing for companies like Kodak to switch formats. SNDK seem to be on top of the technology challenge.
As everyone knows, the price of their product is declining rapidly. They need volume to increase significantly in the very short-term. IMO, digital cameras and other consumer products where you will find SNDK's products will be hot this Christmas season. SNDK has positioned itself to take advantage of this demand with their arrangements with Best Buy, Office Max, Dell, etc.
I'm a suit in the infotech industry so please excuse the lack of techno speak and understanding. Strategically, this company seems to be well positioned and are attacking its challenges impressively. Having worked for IBM in the past, they seem to always have a technologially superior product but fail in marketing and execution. And I'd be surprised if Kodak and the like will adopt a format from Iomoga given their poor track record for product support/service and reliability.
