But I see no way where they do not compete with themselves and I see no way that a distributor does not get ticked off when he loses a sale to Compaq Direct.

Part of the deal is to offer some of these direct sales at the retail channel. Best Buy has a machine set up linked to Compaq's build to order system. Undoubtedly Best Buy gets a kickback from any sales made this way. All Best Buy has to do is keep that sales box plugged in. No inventory to carry and delivery is direct to the customer from Compaq. I doubt many Best Buy customers will use the system however, preferring to walk out with a shiny new box instead of waiting the week for BTO.
