>>Internet mania grips investors

New stock market entrants receive enthusiastic receptions

Saturday, November 14, 1998
MARK EVANS
Technology Reporter In Canada, the zeal for Internet stocks has helped Toronto-based Bid.Com International Inc., which climbed 50 per cent to $1.74 (Canadian) on the Toronto Stock Exchange in heavy trading. There is only a handful of such companies in Canada, and most of them are very small.

Before yesterday's jump, investors had shown muted enthusiasm for Bid.Com even though it's in the same business as Ebay, and its investors include Dulles, Va.-based America Online Inc. and Toronto-based Rogers Communications Inc.

For Canadian investors, the down sideof Internet investing is a painful lesson first encountered three years ago this month. The first wave of Canadian Internet firms hit the market amid a short-lived frenzy of buying.<<
