ucent Technologies Wins 700,000-Line Switching Contract From Telecom
Egypt for "Golden Pyramid" Project
CAIRO, Egypt--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 15, 1998--Lucent Technologies was
awarded a contract by Telecom Egypt (TE) to expand its nationwide
telecommunications network by an additional 700,000 lines.
The agreement is an extension of the contract signed in November, 1997
between Lucent and Telecom Egypt for its ''Golden Pyramid'' project.
Under that agreement, Lucent was chosen to deploy switching and wireless access technologies and provide project management expertise.
Under the latest frame agreement, Lucent will supply its 5ESS® Switches and wireless access technologies to expand the capacity of Telecom Egypt's network in Cairo, Alexandria, the Nile Delta and upper Egypt.
The Lucent installation covered under this contract extension is
scheduled to be completed over a three-year period. ''We are delighted to have been awarded this contract and will continue
to work closely with Telecom Egypt to introduce the latest technology
to Egypt as it heads into the 21st century,'' said Tarek El Hemaily,
president of Lucent Technologies in Egypt. Lucent's 5ESS Switch is a large-scale, software-based digital switching system that delivers any media from one platform. This capability allows service providers to offer any service -- local, long distance, voice, data, or video -- over any network, whether it is wireless or wireline.
The 5ESS Switch currently serves more than 104 million lines and 48
million trunks from 4,000 host switches in more than 50 countries
worldwide. ''Lucent's latest technology and network design and management experience will further enhance Telecom Egypt's ability to offer world-class telecom services in the Middle East and Africa,'' said Rein Zwolsman, vice president, Lucent Technologies, Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa.
Lucent Technologies designs, builds and delivers a wide range of public and private networks, communications systems and software, data
networking systems, business telephone systems and microelectronic
components. Bell Labs is the research and development arm for the
company. For more information on Lucent Technologies, visit the
