Kim et al: What's your "read" on the new IBM wearable PC prototype?

Although featured in Japan back on Sept. 16, a new article in "Popular Mechanics" shows a 10.5 oz. (incl. battery) unit equivalent to the IBM ThinkPad 560 with a "chip sized display" ("magnified display on a chip") producing images similar to a 12 inch monitor. The headset appears like a lightweight microphone boom. The full color chip was apparently developed at IBM's T.J. Watson Research Center in New York.

Reviewing the Watson Research Center site, there are some other "tid-bits" concerning their display technology:

One chip technology.....
<<The technology combines two fields in which IBM has great strength: silicon and liquid crystals. At the basis of a prototype is a 1.5 inch silicon chip with 4 million tiny mirrors etched upon it. Each mirror has its own subsurface transistor to control its voltage. A thin layer of liquid crystal covers the array of mirrors. Applying voltage to a mirror produces an electric field in the liquid crystal above it, which changes the mirror's reflectivity. The system's optics convert the image generated electronically on the chip to a brilliant, highly magnified image on a screen. The technique involves use of separate chips for red green and blue, to produce a full color image.>>

Collaborator, competition, or parallel market research?
