IPS7 Open Signaling Architecture enables seamless SS7-IP convergence
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, Nov. 16 /PRNewswire/ - Nortel Networks (NYSE: NT/TSE:
NTL), a premier developer of signaling solutions for advanced network applications, today announced
an initiative to develop a standardized signaling protocol and open network architecture to simplify
interworking between Signaling System 7 (SS7) networks and multi-media Internet Protocol (IP)
networks.
Code-named IPS7, this new initiative will encompass all SS7 and IP signaling variants within a single,
standardized open architecture. With IPS7, carriers can assemble voice-over-IP (VoIP) networks
with the understanding that the capabilities of the SS7 intelligent network will be supported. As such,
IPS7 seamlessly integrates the richness of the IP packet-oriented network with the reliability and
intelligence inherent in the SS7-based PSTN circuit-switched world.
The implementation of an industry accepted, open standard for SS7-IP interoperability is designed to
enable a new world of global access, while retaining the reliability and wealth of services delivered by
the public switched telephone network (PSTN).
As a first step toward multi-vendor standards development, Nortel Networks submitted a general
architecture definition to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), an international
standards-making body. SSG plans to freely share the concepts of the IPS7 open architecture with the
industry through the IETF and other related standards bodies such as the International
Telecommunications Union (ITU).
