Never mind slant drilling. That trick is as old as Texas. They were using Calgary horizontal drilling technology. Yes the Iraquis did find out about it. That was one reason. The other is Sadaam has always coveted that water access as he does not have any, and he means to get it. The problem with Kuwait since 1890 is it was always a province of Iraq, called Basra. The British for oil-politics reasons surrendered it to their friends, the princes, as they were afraid of the populist Mossadegh.

The trouble with British and American policy in the ME is that it has been perpetually a prop up of hated corruptible regimes in order to get the oil at cheap prices. Western greed is at the root of it. We have only ourselves to blame. The ME did not invent our appetite for stable dictatorship and oil. Imagine if we had promoted republican government in Iraq and strengthened Mossadegh's position and democracy in the Emirates. It would have seemed like suicide. We would have enriched eastern democracies and paid 50 cents a gallon for gas in 1948. But the upshot would have been that we would have on Muslim extremism wanting to start Jihads from Cairo to New Delhi. And the oilsands and domestic exploration would be in full swing. Venezuela and Colombia would not need to export Cocaine. In short it would be a better world all around.

We cannot justify our position in the ME. But now it too dangerous to capitulate. The United Fruit Company loses in the long run and wonders why the signs say "Yanqui Go Home". Why indeed. Why does the great democracy export suppression and dictatorship? Why are they afraid of other peoples democracies? We have seen the enemy and they is us.
