I am hard-pressed to come up with the end devices that will need the next generation chips so desperately. Where is the cry of a shortage of mid-sized supercomputers? Wireless seems to have their designs
in hand, networking etc also likely to make use of lower power but where is the big race to the moon that demands the rush to the next generation?
otoh maybe the only way to succeed is to be the leading edge, be able to sell the latest and greatest and make higher margins while your competitors are left behind in a deflationary commodity. Regardless of whether the leading edge is requested by purchasers, that is what they get and each year they pay the same amount for a marginally improved item instead of a much smaller amount for more of the stuff they bought earlier.
