Greg, it is not so much the speed (and that is needed too) but the capacity of each device. By advancing the chip's art (feature reduction) they pack more on the same Si real estate and you pay much less for the same function. Look at $500 PC, look at DRAM's pricing (down 80% in two years), I would say that by lowering the cost of all these electronic function (which is driven by feature size reduction, which also drive speed and lower power), the industry increases the addressable market.
