You're saying the demand is not deep enough to just buy the darned things, we will only buy if its cheap enough. By aggressively shrinking the size they figure to stimulate demand, but demand for what? The same type of gadgets. Back when notebook computers were in higher demand this seemed to be the great cash cow for the computer makers, they could crank out a quirky computer with semi-custom parts and charge an arm and a leg with a one-year warranty. Now I suppose we are expected to join starfleet and carry a palm pilot everywhere. This type of consumer gadget demand is very fickle and pretty well played out by now.

I'm just trying to visualize why the "shortage" of e-beam masks is projected, and I think it goes back to the extrapolation of the SIA's rosy scenario projections for 1999, 2000 and beyond. A prediction based more on hope than analysis, I am guessing, and so to begin the analysis, what new masses of computational machines do we need to conduct our lives in the next few years? We've got some pretty nifty stuff as it is, that hasn't yet been much deployed.
