Fed will protect US from recession --PNC
economist

NEW YORK, Nov 16 (Reuters) - Federal Reserve Chairman Alan
Greenspan will make sure the U.S. central bank does what it takes to
protect the American economy against any risk of recession in 1999,
PNC Bank Corp. chief economist Stuart Hoffman said on Monday.

''One primary reason we do not expect a U.S. recession in 1999 is our
conviction the Fed can and will do whatever is necessary to cushion
our economy's slowdown,'' Hoffman said.

Fed policy makers on the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meet on Tuesday. The market consensus calls
for a 25-basis-point cut in the 5.0-percent federal funds rate which would be the third such move in less than
two months.

''Greenspan demonstrated his concern by orchestrating an unusually aggressive easing move by cutting both the
funds and discount rates between FOMC meetings,'' Hoffman added, referring to the October 15 easing, the first
inter-meeting move in 4-1/2 years.

The PNC chief Fed watcher expected the Fed to keep on easing and bring the funds rate to 4.25 percent by
mid-1999 without any risk to inflation. He also forecast the U.S. economy will grow by just 1.5 to 2.0 percent
next year.
