Ericsson Signs Phone Doubler Deal With Tele2

November 16, 1998

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN : Ericsson has signed the first Internet Protocol (IP) telephony contract with a Swedish telecommunications firm, Tele2. The deal means that Ericsson will deploy its Phone Doubler technology to Tele2's customers.

As reported previously by Newsbytes, the Phone Doubler technology is designed to be located at the exchange switch or the Internet service provider's (ISP) switch, and allows voice calls to progress over the TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) link to the user's PC, where the call is answered (or originated) using the PC's speaker and microphone.

A recently-introduced Phone Doubler facility known as Quick Call extends the technology to a button on the user's screen. The button can also be included on a Web site.

Clicking on the button opens a voice channel between the user and a human operator, while continuing to allow the Web site to be viewed. Both voice and data transmissions progress across the TCP/IP link, no matter what communications medium the Internet connection is carried across.

For Tele2 subscribers, the Phone Doubler technology will be branded as " Dubbellinjen" -- Swedish for double line -- and will be offered to Tele2's 300,000-plus subscriber base.

According to Tele2, the new service will enable its subscribers to receive a phone call and surf the Internet simultaneously. In addition, the firm says, Tele2 subscribers are able to make high quality phone calls over the IP network at an "exceptionally low cost."
