You are dead on regarding the real horse race to 64-bits, and with Sequent's track record at chip adoption, even if Merced really existed it would be a while for them.

Is Sun scaling to 64 processors per node yet? If you want to run a crappy two tier client/server app with an NT Terminal Server (a.k.a. Microsoft UNIX) three tier front end, the NUMA gear from SQNT would be an interesting way to deploy it. Very high speed interconnect between app and database server. There are a lot of possibilities with the configuration, regardless of what you and I feel about Wintel. And I do agree with you about both Merced and Wintel.

Maybe Sun should buy Sequent...trading below book value. That would insure that IBM and HP NEVER figure out how to do large scale SMP boxes! Without help neither will ever get there.
