Kevin - I assume you are referring to their VAN or value-added network, not VPN. A VAN is essentially a secure connection set up on SE's infrastructure over which trading partners can transact. A VPN is the Internet's equivalent of this, with traffic travelling over the Internet, but supposedly securely. The problem is that everyone is not convinced that VPN's are as secure as they need to be to replace VANs. Beyond that, there is no accountability over a VPN since no single entity is managing that network and can track late or lost packets. So reliability and bandwidth become issues as well.

I think the VPN threat is more of a 5-10 year story - not relevant to our time horizon for now.
