This is a bb stock. When you bought your 500 shares, a market maker (MM) sold it to you. He or she may then have purchased 500 (or more) replacement shares from another MM. (Why? I don't know.) So trades between MM's show up on the electronic bulletin board system and are counted in the total volume. This happens very frequently. My general rule is to divide the daily volume by 2 to arrive at a more realistic estimate of the shares actually traded by investors (end-users as it were).
