Pokemon started in Japan as a Nintendo Game Boy portable video game that involves finding, capturing, collecting and training the 150 different Pokemon. The goal of the adventure is to become the "World's Greatest Pokemon Trainer". The popularity of the video game expanded exponentially over the last 18 months in Japan into a full-fledged entertainment wonder which includes: the No. 1 kids cartoon show for both boys and girls; the No. 1 plush doll for 1997; 8 million video games; 1 million CDS, and over 1,000 different products from puzzles to snacks -- and the craze continues. Nintendo of America Inc. will release the Pokemon Game Boy video game to the U.S. this fall, timed to coincide with the launch of the first shipments of the Hasbro toy line. The Summit Media Group, the media and television syndication arm of 4Kids Entertainment Inc., has syndicated the Pokemon animated television series in over 90% of the country, premiering in September.
