VLSI Licenses RSA Technology for IPSEC Data Networking Security Chip

MD5 Hardware-Based Cryptography Capabilities Promote Secure, Internet Commerce

Applications

SAN MATEO, Calif., Nov. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- RSA Data Security, Inc. today announced that VLSI Technology, Inc., a technical and market leader in system-on-a-chip custom ICs, has incorporated RSA's security technology into a new Internet Protocol Security (IPSEC) coprocessor chip. The new VLSI chip will be used in networking hardware for Internet commerce applications. VLSI licensed RSA's implementation of the MD5 message digest security algorithm for its new chip.

Neil Shea, VLSI vice president, Internet and Secure Products commented: "RSA's data security algorithms have become true industry standards. This license brings together the leading silicon chip manufacturer and the security technology leader to provide a high-speed, high-performance silicon-based security solution for the data networking marketplace. Hardwiring data security on-chip offers much higher performance and greater hacker-resistance than software-only approaches. These benefits, and RSA's implementation of the MD5 algorithm, position VLSI's forthcoming IPSEC processor chip to become a standard building block in all kinds of Internet commerce networking gear."

"Today, data security is an important element for any networking device," said Scott Schnell, senior vice president of marketing for RSA and Security Dynamics Technologies, Inc. "Using RSA as its foundation, VLSI's new hardware-based security solution provides robust data encryption to protect consumer privacy and enable electronic commerce over the Internet."

VLSI began its involvement in the data security market supplying cryptography integrated circuits to U.S. government agencies and data security-conscious private companies. With the rise of digital information transmission as the lifeline of worldwide economic activity, VLSI now actively applies its data encryption and access control technologies to commercial and consumer applications.

Key commercial applications for VLSI security chips include electronic commerce, cable modems, satellite data transmission, voice and data communications and consumer video. Through its efforts, VLSI has emerged as a leading high-end data security chip supplier, with its products delivering the maximum amount of data privacy and protection allowed under U.S. and international law.
