Hmmm - NT not mature enough for enterprise-wide systems? Wonder how big a surprise that is?
NATIONAL COMPUTING CENTRE: IT managers dismiss Windows NT as an enterprise wide solution
NOV 17, 1998, M2 Communications - The National Computing Centre (NCC) reports that IT managers are not moving across to windows-based enterprise-wide systems, despite claims from leading manufacturers.
'Competition and control - the corporate market for windows systems', the latest Guideline to be released by the NCC, investigates Microsoft's strategy for the corporate market. It has found that IT managers are, and will be for the foreseeable future, maintaining a number of different systems for mission critical applications.
The guideline identifies that many managers view Windows NT as insufficiently technically advanced to support mission critical applications.
Neil Spencer-Jones, NCC's managing consultant for systems and networking, comments, "IT users within large corporates have many different needs and IT managers believe that these are best met using a number of different systems".
The report also found that the battle between UNIX and NT is not as confrontational as many think. The Guideline identifies that where NT is being implemented, it is to replace Novell not UNIX. Spencer-Jones, says, "Novell NetWare and NT share far more similarities than NT and UNIX. Despite Microsoft positioning NT as an enterprise solution, the perception of NT in the market place is that it is a desktop solution and doesn't deliver the technology needs of a large corporate network. We feel that NT and Unix are more likely to co-exist in the near future rather than being competitors."
The report also analyses the market opportunities for other operating system contenders, including Linux, which has been touted as the operating system to challenge Microsoft NT.
The NCC Guideline - 'Competition and control - the corporate market for windows systems', - was developed using market research and reports from analysts around the world as well as interviews with an NCC panel of experts. There are 10 NCC Guidelines produced per annum which concentrate on IT issues affecting UK plc.
The Guideline is freely available to NCC members and may be purchased for GBP 145 by non-members. NCC Corporate Membership costs from GBP 995 per annum. To obtain a copy, please call the NCC on 0161 242 2200.
