1. At this time, there is no new information concerning the
whereabouts of the four expatriates and six local personnel believed to
have been abducted at the time of the attack on the company's Yetwene
minesite in north east Angola. The company has not heard from the group
who carried out the attack on the mine and every effort is currently being
made by both the Government of Angola and DiamondWorks to establish contact
with them. The company has retained the services of a team of experts to
advise on the return of the missing people and will not comment further on
this activity.
2. The Minister of Mines for Angola, Mr Sumbula, is attending a World
Bank Conference in Marakesh and will be reading the enclosed letter from
the company to the assembled audience.
3. The company has issued a statement on the actions of its security
contractors at the time of the attack which took place on Sunday, 8
November and this is also enclosed.
4. The Government has informed DiamondWorks that it has increased the
deployment of troops in the Lunda provinces in the north east of Angola.
These troops have been tasked with the responsibility of enhancing the
security of mining operations in the area.
5. DiamondWorks has now held meetings with 10 other mining companies
currently operating in Angola and all have agreed to establish a
coordinated effort to ensure that the regional security situation is
permanently improved. All the companies have now made representations to
the Government on this issue.
