11/17/1998 - DaimlerChrysler to Combine AFV Research
Auburn Hills, Michigan - DaimlerChrysler AG - the new company launched today after a merger of Chrysler Corp. and Daimler-Benz - will combine its alternative-fuel vehicle (AFV) research and development programs, reports the Detroit News. Bernard I. Robertson, DaimlerChrysler's vice president for engineering technologies and general manager of Dodge truck and Jeep operations, said an obvious place to begin is with battery electric vehicles. "It doesn't make sense to develop two totally differentelectric vehicles," Robertson said. He also said Chrysler has more-extensive experience with "hybrids of various forms - gas turbine, diesel, or fuel-cell hybrids, and Daimler has not. They've done some, but not nearly as much as (Chrysler) has." For fuel cells, U.S.-based teams will continue on fuel-cell hybrid and gasoline fuel-cell projects while German teams will continue on methanol-reformer systems in cooperation with Ballard Power Systems. Both teams will share results and look for ways to cut duplication of efforts.
