LAS VEGAS -- Sales for Compaq's new direct-sales program are twice what the company projected, Compaq president and CEO Eckhard Pfeiffer said in a keynote speech here at Comdex/Fall '98 Monday.
Pfeiffer said Compaq's goal with its direct-sales program is not simply to match Dell or Gateway, but to build a superior customer-service model. "The best model is customer choice," he said.

Houston-based Compaq launched last week a new line of Prosignia small-business products and services available through the channel, but also offered them through its DirectPlus sales operation.

Compaq used to rely solely on its channel partners, Pfeiffer said. By adding a direct-sales effort, the PC maker increased its ability to serve customers and transformed itself into a "global IT company," he said.

In his keynote titled "Welcome to the New World of Computing," Pfeiffer talked about the dramatic role the Internet is having on the industry and how Compaq is addressing it.

He introduced what the company is calling the first broadband Internet PC, the Presario 5100C. Equipped with a digital modem, the $1,599 PC features a 400-MHz AMD K6-2 processor, 8-gigabyte hard drive, and 128 megabytes of RAM.

Pfeiffer also unveiled Compaq's Triple Play broadband Internet-access program. Designed to bring high-speed Internet access nationwide, the program spans cable, DSL, and satellite connections.

He showed off a new software program called Facework that converts 2-D images to 3-D. Pfeiffer said the software "will change what is now a static Web environment."

In the enterprise environment, Compaq is committed to 64-bit computing, Pfeiffer said. "By that, I mean not only Alpha, but also Intel's 64-bit" extension," he said.
