As I recall, narcissistic personality disorders are not inflexible; but I shall have to go back and hit the books to be sure of definitions.

I have been absolutely astonished at some of the fury and sheer viciousness I've seen on various threads. There are some, of course, where things get a trifle out of hand and different people have difference tolerance levels. This in not what I mean. What I mean is that some of these postings sound as though they are coming from PCs in institutions!

As for your question, I think you've answered in part yourself. Another factor in making e-mail flames so intensely provocative is that they remain where you can look at them and get steamed up all over again, in the fashion of angry letters. Spoken words may linger in your memory but not with the same immediacy of original impact.
